What is an Electronic Cigarette?

Electronic cigarettes, e-cigs or vapor cigarettes, are all terms used to refer to a handheld electronic device that vaporises e-juice, or e-liquid into vapor, vapor is the American way of spelling while vapour is the British way. The vapour is inhaled through the device as an alternative to inhaling cigarette smoke. So an Electronic cigarette is essentially a nicotine delivery system but instead of inhaling smoke the liquid nicotine is vaporised without burning or combustion. The user is not inhaling smoke but vapour.

E cigarettes and how they work

Throughout the evolution of the electronic cigarette designs have take many forms and sizes, as you would expect the first e-cigs resembled a traditional tobacco cigarette, since then various manufacturers have introduced  different designs,  however the basic components remain the same and most models operate on the same basis.

Electronic cigarettes operate by a rechargeable battery although some manufacturers produce a disposable “use once” e-cigarette. Batteries have different lives and strengths, beware of the cheap copies offered by many vendors as they can have a very short life and have poor quality soft  metal threading which will wear away with constant use, you get what you pay for!

The atomiser is the element that draws current from the battery and vaporises the liquid into vapour. The current from the battery heats the element which in turn heats the liquid resulting in vaporisation. Different atomisers have a specific resistance which is measured in Ohms.

If an atomiser is not matched to a particular battery (ie: different manufacturers) and there is a current overload the atomiser will overheat and the result can be a burnt taste. Like any electronic device you should always use matched components as directed by the manufacturer.

How To Choose an Electronic Cigarette

If you are new to the world of vaping it can be so confusing with all the different brands, functionality, quality, and price difference, its overwhelming! E Cigarette forums are not much help either as everyone has their own favourite, plus the fact many people are paid by manufacturers to promote their products so you never get a true picture. If you don’t have a friend who has been through it all the best policy is to go with a known brand, it can be tempting to go for a cheap one as it could look exactly the same but you will definitely not get a good experience for your first vape, just don’t do it!

Are Electronic Cigarettes Safe?

There is a lot of misinformation out there and both the media and public health officials don’t really know anything about e-cigarettes. When someone gets sick from smoking illegal drugs or oil the media and other authorities call it “vaping”, but vaping should NOT be generalised within these categories. Smoking oil and illegal drugs and vaping are two very different things.

What we do know are the health effects of smoking regular cigarettes which include lung disease, cancer, high blood pressure, heart problems and more. Smoking regular cigarettes is not like vaping, with cigarettes you are inhaling smoke which has many dangerous risks involved. With electronic cigarettes you are inhaling vapour not smoke.

What is E-Liquid?

E-liquid is made up of either or both PG (Propylene Glycol) and VG (Vegetable Glycerin), flavouring, and nicotine. The e-liquid may be contained in a pre-filled e-cig cartridge or a refillable tank. When the e-liquid comes into contact with the atomizer it produces vapour which is inhaled by the user.
